Law Students Internship with Centre for Minority Rights and Strategic Litigation.


The Centre for Minority Rights and Strategic Litigation Trust (CMRSL) is a Charitable Trust incorporated under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act Cap. 164 Of the Laws of Kenya.

The Trust’s mission is to reduce human rights violations against LGBTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) persons, foster equality, dignity, inclusiveness, human rights and protection of LGBTQ persons in Kenya. Our Vision is to foster a society that upholds and protects human rights of all. We undertake strategic litigation, provide legal representation and legal aid to LGBTIQ persons, advocate for inclusion for all and Human Rights observance in the society, and conduct civic education forums for LGBTIQ community.

About the programme.

Our Legal department seeks to engage LL.B students undertaking their final year of studies in any Kenyan University from across the country on a six months Internship programme. The programme will see the Interns working closely with our volunteer advocates and supporting the Litigation process through research on applicable laws. They will also provide legal assistance to LGBTIQ victims of Human rights Violations. Throughout the programme, the interns will assist in related tasks including general office administration and any other relevant duty or responsibility the intern might be assigned to. Our Legal Officer will oversee the Internship programme by providing the interns with support and supervision. This will build on the law students’ valuable practical work experience, develop and refine their skills, undertake research among others, in a professional setting.

Responsibilities

Programme assignments may depend on Legal priorities that arise during CMRSL’s operations. The broader application will include, but not limited to;

  1. The interns will assist in reviewing legal assistance applications from LGBTIQ clients and assigning them for legal aid on need basis.  
  2. Conduct phone intake with clients to identify potential legal issues and obtain necessary information. 
  3. Making direct contact with our volunteer advocates to assist with the assignment and handling of cases. 
  4. Maintaining the legal aid/court diary.
  5. Carrying out follow ups on court cases. 
  6. Undertake legal researches.

Required profile.

If you  are a final year LL.B student studying in  any Kenyan University and intending to base your dissertation/project on LGBTIQ rights, then we would love to engage you.

The internship may be undertaken offsite and you may therefore apply from any part of the Country.  

Desirable competencies include; 

  • Ability to conduct research and prepare reports on legal issues, draft various legal and project related documents and an understanding of development issues.
  • Ability to identify and analyse legal issues. 
  • Ability to research and deliver reports in a timely manner. 
  • Excellent IT skills and ability to provide administrative assistance when required.
  • Excellent organisation skills and the ability to work on simultaneous issues with strict deadlines.

Work Schedule

This is a part-time position and engagement hours will be agreed based on the student’s study schedule.

Remuneration

The position is Voluntary. However, successful applicants will be reimbursed their monthly internship related expenses
