Are you a Paralegal from either of the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kwale, Taita-taveta, Kilifi and Lamu? The Centre for Minority Rights and Strategic Litigation (CMRSL) is looking for you! 

With funding from the Canadian Government under its CFLI programme, we seek to engage  5 volunteers for a period of 8 months under our monitoring and documentation programme, which is part of our project for improving access to justice for the LGBTIQ  community in the region.

You will join our human rights violation monitoring and response network in the coastal region and support our mission of reducing violence and discrimination targeting LGBTIQ community by enforcing equality, inclusiveness and protection of the LGBTIQ persons and in whole fostering  a society that upholds human rights for all.

Basic information

Title: Volunteer Paralegal

Duration: 8 months

No. of positions: 5 (1 in each of the 5 Counties). 

Qualification

Has experience of working with LGBTIQ community especially on human rights.

General responsibilities

The volunteer paralegal will be mandated to act as a link between CMRSL and the LGBTIQ community by;

  1. Monitoring & responding to LGBTIQ human rights violations within your County.
  2. Reporting LGBTQ human rights violations to justice institutions.
  3. Supporting and linking LGBTIQ victims of human rights violations to legal aid and/or  justice institutions for redress.
  4. Documenting human rights violations meted against LGBTIQ persons within your County.
  5. Compiling monthly reports and case studies on human rights violation incidents and trends in your County.
  6. Coordinating civic education to LGBTIQ persons within your County with the support of CMRSL legal department.

Required profile;

  1. Passionate about human rights.
  2. Excellent knowledge on LGBTIQ human rights violations and appropriate responses. 
  3. Excellent knowledge on monitoring and documentation of human rights violations.
  4. Excellent knowledge on LGBTIQ issues and challenges.
  5. Possess strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  6. Excellent organisational skills.
  7. Mastery of basic computer softwares.
  8. Good capacity to listen and express.
  9. Able to work and deliver under minimal supervision.
  10. Possess or has access to a smartphone.  
  11. Ability to adhere to our organisational core values.

The paralegal will work under the supervision of and report to our Documentation officer.
